McDuff Farm house

oil on board 10*12
Although the house got a little overpainted
I like the way the background worked out.
Each Time I paint I learn something new
Parts of the painting wont work but others will
and that helps with another painting further on
I am starting to feel when I have a good one or a learning painting
either way I enjoyed getting out of the house and enjoying nature.

little house.

oil on board  8*10
This was an overcast day with purple sky
this was a painting I saw a few days a go and I thought I would go back
another time.
I do that I see places and think I could go back there at this time
and see what the light would be like.
this is a backlit painting and I really wanted to push the
background away and again try something different.

Fields of Summer

oil on board 8*10
I decided to paint really light this time as I have been going too dark,
it's easy to do and I just wanted to try something different.
I saw these cows around the last ten mins of finishing they would
look just right as part of a field scene.

Stormy Pink Clouds

oil on board 10*12
Painted another storm scene
edited the scene a little but I really like the distant hills and the
the way the clouds moved.
If I make a bigger painting of this one I would
cool the clouds a little and make them more purple.
I tried doing an underpainting of pink red and it completely dominated
the clouds so I wont do that again.
I'll go for a cooler under painting.

Summertime

Framed oil on canvas 16*20
I painted this last year from a sketch I had made during summer of last year
I have another floating around I just have to dig it out.
this is from the side of the main road just outside of Nanton.
cool little place with goats and sheep.

Storm over Red Deer Lake

oil on board 10*12
We have had a ton of storms this year they seem to come from different directions
two or three at a time. This one came over our head and I was ready for it.
I was going to paint a scene to the right of this but it lacked punch or interest
so I turn to the left and this was more interesting to paint.
I was afraid that the rain would wash the painting off of the board and corrupt the paint
but it didnt rain on us luckily I just got these massive dark cloud structures.
I had little time to catch this scene so I had to remember some of it
but I captured the essence before it moved on.

Overflowing lake.

oil on board 8*10
I painted this scene also before and wasn't satisfied.
it was at dusk and I loved the interplay of colours and shadows
but I couldn't finish it time
So I went back again and painted a little earlier in the day and tried again.
I wiggled around a lot to find the best place to paint.
I had to ask myself the question.
What is it that I am really interested in what am I really looking at.
and it was the light in the water and the interplay of cloud in the water
which really interested me.

Barn Painting.

Oil on board 9*12
Found this barn a few years ago and wanted to paint it then but I didn't have the skills
to do it.
I like this painting for it's energy. still a little too dark but I repainted it later again to see if
if I could do a better job.

High Summer Painting 1 and 2

oil on board 8*10 and below 11*14
These paintings show how I was able to go back and repaint the scene

I found this scene off Highway 112,
I was early after noon and this was a tough painting as I needed to get the light right.
I pushed and pushed and then the light changed and I added the green field. eek. fluffed it.
So I have to go back and went in the morning to this other painting below.

This one below is a 11*14. I did a lot of reordering to get a better flow
and I removed a couple of fields that really didn't need to be there.
and I changed the angle of trees to suit the painting and it worked a lot better.
With a different light it made the Painting more interesting.

Dusk 1 and 2

oil on board 6*8
Here are a side by side comparison as to what editing can do to improve the painting
I found this scene just as the sun was setting behind me.
I wanted to try and capture the various colours and create a sense of depth
I could crop the painting to 6*6 it might make it stronger.

Trees

oil on board 8*10
I found these trees on the same on the same road as the previous painting
I will have to go back  I dont mind repainting the scene till I get right.
I need to reduce the local colour and use less red underpainting.

Back streets.

oil on board 9*12
This is what the painting looked like when I was painting it but whenI got inside
the house it darkened a lot .
So I will go back here and paint the scene again and try to get it right.
soon the fields will be more golden and that might be cool to repaint.

Red Deer Lake

Oil on board 9*12
I tried something different and limited my Palette
it was a really cloudy day but I pushed through and it was tough
to keep remembering that I just wanted to put value down and not the local colour
